In memory

The Guardian of Sasthamkotta Lake

A veteran environmental campaigner who spearheaded the grassroots resistance to protect Sasthamkotta Lake from ecological collapse, illegal exploitation, and pollution.

K. Karunakaran Pillai, the former Chairman of the Sasthamkotta Lake Protection Council (Sasthamkotta Thadaka Samrakshana Samithi), dedicated decades of his life to safeguarding Kerala’s largest freshwater lake. His relentless advocacy turned local environmental concerns into a historic community movement.

  • Frontline Environmental Advocacy

Led high-profile public agitations and hunger strikes against rampant illegal sand mining, clay extraction, and land encroachments around the lake basin.

  • Preserving the Water Source

Fought tirelessly to eliminate waste dumping and chemical runoff, ensuring clean drinking water for over half a million people across Kollam district.

  • Legal Interventions

Spearheaded petitions to local government bodies, state departments, and environmental tribunals to enforce stricter regulations and mandate buffer zone protection.

  • Ramsar Site Conservation

Played a crucial role in highlighting the ecological vulnerability of Sasthamkotta Lake after its designation as a wetland of international importance (Ramsar Site) in 2002.

  • Grassroots Mobilization

Unrivaled in uniting local residents, student groups, and environmentalists to form a collective shield around the lake’s fragile ecosystem.
